PTA News

When I set out to be president of Vista del Mar's PTA, I imagined I would write a monthly newsletter to keep you all informed.  However, maybe you noticed that it is March and I've only written one newsletter. So I apologize if you have wondered what is going on with PTA and have missed the newsletters, what can I say, life gets in the way!

The last 7 months have been busy. We have had assemblies, funded field trips, granted middle school grants, reimbursed teachers for a fraction of what they have spent in their classrooms, have been working on the yearbook, collecting box tops, trying to encourage Ralph's shoppers to link up their Ralph's card, working the book fair, buying new books for the library, donated through "Giving Night," worked the Holiday Gift Shop, selling spirit wear, supported "Meet the Masters," did Red Ribbon Week, supported Blue Ribbon Week, hosted "The Cyber Bullying Cop," supported the K-3 Music program with The Mako Foundation, and held "Dine Out Weeks," (and I'm almost positive I left something out).

The next two and a half months of school will continue to be busy. We are planning for our biggest event of the year-our spring carnival. The carnival this year will be held on May 12, 2017 from 3:30-7:30. We worked really hard to try and make sure we do away with long lines (unfortunately, for insurance reasons, we had to do away with the bungee jump) while adding new and exciting attractions (hint, Ferris Wheel).  We have several food trucks lined up (The Cut, TLC Sidewalk Café, Mustache Mikes, Feeding Frnzy, Soho Tacos, and of course, Talega favorite, Ball Park Pizza will be there). Take a look at their menus and decide what sounds good! We are also working with sponsors and would like to thank BRANDON ORTHODONTICS as our Thresher Shark title sponsor, Camp Bow Wow as a Hammerhead Level Sponsor, Pacific Coast Veterinary as a Sand Shark Level Sponsor, and Dr. Eckl as a Mako Shark Sponsor. We are continuously looking for new sponsors and if you have a connection, please email us at vdmptacarnival@gmail.com. All sponsors will receive recognition. Our decorations committee has met and has some great ideas. Cake Walk is being planned again. Our auction is off to a great start and we are also looking for in kind donations for that, as well. We are bringing back the classroom baskets, a letter will go out to room parents soon.  Last, we will need volunteers for the day of (setting up, working, and taking down).

In addition to carnival, we have Tile Wall coming up (Beach Bus Bistro will be there if you wish to buy a snack or dinner), we still have one more book fair (the best one-Buy One, Get One), 4th grade Gold Rush, 4th/5th grade Junior Olympics, and the 8th grade awards/dance. Tile wall will be on Monday, March 13, Tuesday, March 14th, and Wednesday, March 15th. We have a limited number of tiles left to buy. Your student can paint a legacy to remain at the school long after they have left! Tile Wall only comes around once every two years. See vdmpta.org to buy a tile or for more information.

Lastly, we have elections coming up at our next general association meeting on March 23 at 8:30 am in the MPR. We still need a treasurer (and cannot have a PTA without a treasurer). Our current treasurer, Katie Mitchell is amazing, but is no longer able to continue in that role. She will train you and help you every step of the way. It is a very important role and I will do everything I can to support you. Most of the work can be done at home, but coming to the meetings is important as every month, the treasurer has a report to give (Katie will even give you a script to follow).  Please email me at vdmptapresident@gmail.com or Katie at vdmptatreasurer@gmail.com if you might be interested. And of course, any member of PTA can attend our general meetings (I promise, we won't corner you to give up your life to be on the PTA). Being a member of PTA is bigger than just donating money or helping out once in a while. You have a say in what we can spend our money on, you can have a say in what programs we do, and if get involved on a deeper level, you can even have a say on the advocacy and legislative side. CA PTA is the biggest advocacy association working to improve the lives of all children and families. What's not to love about that?

Thank you for reading to the end! Have a great day and don't forget this weekend is "Spring Forward."
