WHAT IS WATCH D.O.G.S. ?

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students)

The Dads of Great Students ‘Watch D.O.G.S.' program is one of the nation’s largest and most respected school-based, family, and community engagement organizations in the country.

Our program helps provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important. Meanwhile, we provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security, reduce bullying and provide a greater sense of campus safety allowing students and teachers to focus on learning.

FAQ’S

What’s the time commitment?

You will spend the entire day at school from 7:40am to 2:45pm, one time during a school year. There may be an opportunity to volunteer again if there is availability.

What will I be doing?

Most of the time, you will be outside helping with recess and lunch, PE, traffic, and walking perimeter patrols. You will also have a chance to spend half an hour in your kid’s classroom(s). In the classroom, you will be assisting the teacher with various tasks (assisting a math group, reading to kids, making copies, etc.)

Can I get work done while volunteering?

You will have multiple short breaks, including during lunch, to return calls and work while in the Watch DOGS Cave (a room designated for Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers). Please note that being on the phone is discouraged while in front of the kids however.

Who can volunteer?

Any father figure can volunteer. Dads, uncles, and grandpas are typically the types of positive role models that volunteer.

Will I have any training?

Yes. Every volunteer receives a great deal of information before the volunteer day, including an orientation, playground procedures, do’s & dont’s, etc. You will also be given a Watch DOGS vest and a walkie talkie to use for the day.

Do I need to be fingerprinted to volunteer?

No. There are two levels of clearance. All volunteers are cleared at a Tier II level when they sign in with our Raptor System upon arrival. This is mandatory and is when you receive your name tag. However, Tier II volunteers are not permitted to be alone with students. The second level of clearance is Tier I. This is the LiveScan process where you will be fingerprinted and cleared with the State of California Department of Justice. Please note there is a charge for this service. When you have Tier I clearance, you are permitted to be unsupervised with students and go on field trips. You must request the LiveScan form from CUSD.
